A Man Who Survived Ebola Virus

Note: This interview with Saa Sabas, an Ebola survivor who now volunteers for the Red Cross Society of Guinea, was conducted for CNN by Moustapha Diallo from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. (CNN) — The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has hit “unprecedented” proportions, according to relief workers on the ground, with the WHO reporting 844 cases including 518 deaths since the epidemic began in March. There is no cure or vaccine to treat Ebola, but the aid agency MSF has shown it doesn’t have to be a death sentence if treated early. Ebola typically kills 90% of patients but the death rate in this outbreak has dropped to roughly 60%. One man who survived the disease describes how the virus took hold: How did you contract Ebola? I am an agronomist and I have two children, one boy and one girl. I work in the pharmacy at the health center of Gueckedou in southern Guinea. When my father was hospitalized at the health center I naturally volunteered to be at his bedside so other family members would not have to make the daily trek of tens of kilometers, traversing the trails between their village and the facility. I cleaned him when he vomited and also did his laundry. I also often gave him food and drink. He had diarrhea at least eight times per day but I did not know he was suffering from Ebola. Five days after being hospitalized, [my father] passed away. After his death the medical staff realized he had presented Ebola symptoms and as I had close contact with him, it meant that I was at risk. So they told me that I needed to be followed up for 21 days and if ever I felt a small fever I had to come to the health center. The countdown then started for me: after nine days I got fever and this persisted until the 11th day. Finally I went to the treatment center — where I did an Ebola test which was positive. What were the symptoms? How did you feel while you were ill? I first got a fever which persisted. My body temperature reached nearly 40C (104 degrees Fahrenheit). After that I had diarrhea, vomits, dysentery and hiccups [all symptoms of Ebola]. I went to the toilet several times a day and I felt so tired and uncomfortable. How and where were you treated? I received medical assistance at the Ebola treatment center, put in place at the health centre of Gueckedou. The medical staff provided me with oral medications and infusions. They also provided me with food. I suffered at lot in the beginning with diarrhoea and hiccups but with the treatment I started to feel better. What was the initial reaction in your home village after you recovered? Joy, for my family because everyone thought that I would not survive this disease as many others people had died. However before the medical staff released me to go back to my family they tested me three times to make sure that I really had recovered. Afterwards they gave me a certificate of discharge. They also visited my family, the leaders and elders of my community to inform them that I had recovered and I was no longer contagious. Despite this, I was stigmatized. Some people avoided me in the beginning but now, over time, they have learned to accept me. Now they call me “anti-Ebola.” You’re now working with Red Cross volunteers in Guinea to raise awareness of the disease: what lessons are passing on? I am part of a team of Red Cross volunteers, visiting communities, raising awareness on how to prevent the spread of the disease. One of the messages I try to pass on to the communities is to go early to the health center when sufferers first feel symptoms. The treatment is free of charge. People there will give you food and clothes and you can get a chance to survive. What’s your message for the outside world about Ebola? How can they help? Everyone should be mobilized. We need to educate people and increase the sensitization. This is the key to stop the dangerous disease Ebola. Many people have already died, that is why I participate in activities [to educate people]. I urge people to go the isolation and treatment centres if they experience the earliest symptoms of the disease, to increase their chance of being cured and surviving.

Police Explains Rise In Female Bombings In Nigeria

The Nigeria Police Force spokesperson Frank Mba has given an insight into the recent rise of female suicide bombers in Nigeria. Addressing newsmen at the National Information Center yesterday, Mr Mba said Boko Haram men now use women because they raise fewer suspicions. "If you have been following the trends of terrorism worldwide, you will understand that use of female suicide bombers is actually not totally new. It is actually a new trend in our own part of the world. The reasons why established international terrorist organizations go for female suicide bombers is clear. The major reason is that women raise fewer suspicions, particularly with security layers, and so they take advantage of the fact that women raise fewer suspicion to try to indoctrinate and recruit female suicide bombers. The suspicion even becomes much lesser if the woman in question is a minor and that explains why. In addition to that is the fact that by rules of engagement that we are cultured to, male security operatives are not allowed to frisk or search females but we are equally developing counter terrorism strategies to deal with that.” he said

Landlady’s Children Cut Tenant’s Private Parts [PHOTO]

This 35-year-old man, Yinka Offehin, who resides on Popoola Street, off Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area of Lagos is now battling for life after his scrotum was cut by the children of his landlady. According to reports, Yinka was attacked while sleeping in his room with his family members. His wife, Bisi, who was with him when the incident happened, identified the assailants as Solomon and Damilola, the children of the landlady. She said, “On Thursday morning, around 3am, while we were sleeping, we heard loud bangs on our door. We initially thought they were armed robbers because the house beside ours had recently been robbed. “When they entered, we saw they were children of our landlady. They began destroying our electronics and other property. “There were two of them. One held a knife in his hand. They took N800, 000. They descended on my husband and he also fought back. In that confusion, my husband shouted and we saw that one of the attackers had cut Yinka’s scrotum. I can’t say what they used to cut off my husband’s scrotum.” Explaining what led to the unthinkable action, the victim said the genesis of his problem was when he had a misunderstanding with his landlady and was asked to vacate his apartment. “I was asked to leave the house immediately, but after the intervention of the traditional ruler of the community, I was asked to leave by the end of August. “But that decision did not go down well with the children of my landlady and they continued to make trouble with me. “I was already planning to leave their house and had even contacted an agent when they attacked me without any provocation. I want the government to fight for me,” he said. The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident, saying “It was around 3am, while the victim was sleeping in his room, that one Solomon Olowogbemi and Damilola Olayeye, the children of his landlady, came in and started fighting with him. “In the process, they inflicted injury on him with an unknown object. The skin of his scrotum was partly cut off, thereby exposing one of his testicles. The two suspects have been arrested and detained and the victim taken to a hospital.”

The Senior special assistant equally gave the sum of N200,000 each to 61 parents out of the 122 that came on the visit. 61 parents were given N100,000 each on the basis that the money given to them was not enough to go round at the agreed amount of N200,000 each. 10-Yr-Old Girl Strapped To Bomb Explosive Belt, 2 Others Arrested In Katsina

The group of people was detained by security forces on suspicion of belonging to Nigeria-based extremists, collectively known as Boko Haram. According to the information provided by Coordinator of National Information Centre, NIC, Mike Omerri, a suspicious car, Honda CRV, with suspected Boko Haram members was stopped by security forces in Katsina state. The people in the car included one adult male, one teenage girl aged 18 and one underage girl aged 10. During the arrest operation the older suspects tried to flee the scene in the vehicle, but failed and subsequently were detained. The child, simply identified Hadiza, was discovered to have been strapped to an explosive belt, Mr. Omerri claims. The chilling trend of deploying young women and girls as bombers comes three-and-half months after Boko Haram attack on a girls’ secondary school in Chibok, Borno State, where it kidnapped approximately 300 girls in the northeast. Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau also promised to convert the girls in Islam and "sell them in the market, by Allah." "I am the one who captured all those girls and will sell all of them. I have a market where I sell human beings because it is Allah that says I should sell human beings. Yes, I will sell women, because I sell women," Shekau said. The Nigerian government has been criticised for its lack of immediate response to the abduction, with a wave of demonstrations demanding action engulfing the whole country and drawing attention of the world. President Goodluck Jonathan has accepted help from the United States, Britain, France, China and Israel, which have sent specialist teams to help in the search effort. Some Nigerians Refuses To Sympathies With El Rufai Over Sons Death

Rather than commiserate with former minister, Nasir El Rufai over the loss of one of his sons, who died in a car crash in the early hours of Tuesday, some Nigerians have taken to his facebook page to condemn and mock him. The former minister, known for always antagonizing the federal government, broke the sad news in a statement posted on his Facebook page, saying “From Allah, we came and to Him we shall return. Please join our family in praying for the repose of the soul of my son, Hamza El-Rufai who died this morning in a motor accident in Abuja”. Of the 30, 197 comments that the facebook post generated, about seventy percent of them were harsh and condemning. Commenting on the post, some followers condemned El Rufai for posting such a message on facebook rather than mourning his son. Some others mocked him and sarcastically queried him for not blaming President Goodluck Jonathan for the accident. One Miss Ezenma wrote “Are you serious? You have the mind to come online to “post” after losing your son this very morning in an accident when you should be mourning and be inconsolable”. Another one commented on the page saying “This man has lost it, your son died this morning and he’s on the internet again, waiting for him to accuse GEJ of being responsible as usual. RIP young Hamza, May your soul RIP”. Still criticizing the minister, a facebook follower George said “RIP. Sentiments aside, it’s high time you slow down on how you attack national issues. I used to be his fan but he decided to rubbish his hard earned reputation for the sake of politics. When a man, rather than spend his life meaningfully, engages in silly tweeting all over the place, these are the kind of reminders he gets to tell him to wake up. I pity his kids dying one by one with no fatherly spiritual protection. I guess he has them so many their death doesn’t take him away from the internet. Do forgive my frankness”. Several other Nigerians, however, sent in their condolence messages and prayed for the dead boy’s soul. One Sammy Francis wrote “I can’t believe some people are rejoicing over the death of a human. Let me believe you didn’t read properly before commenting but he didn’t say he lost his dog or chicken. Even the whites cry for their dogs! The GEJ you are fighting for wrongly, will visit or call El-Rufai and do the necessary things, but you will be here fighting ignorantly. I smell wizards in the church and witches in christendom because the Bible never taught us to rejoice over the death of a man, only witchcraft or wizandry can do this. if God says Jonathan will rule in 2015 then so be it. So why start fighting a fight that is anti-christ? To you sir El-Rufai, the God of your belief will strengthen you. God knows best”. Another follower, Saliu Kolawole said “How recklessly thoughtless some Nigerians can get! You coldly mocked a fellow human being over a worst calamity that can befall any parent. You people are no better than those beasts in Sambisa Forest. Anyway, as we Yoruba say, you see another’s misfortune now but you don’t know what fate has in stock for you tomorrow. And from experience, nothing anyone says can soften these stone hearted beasts. Nasir has done the best thing through his instant acknowledgement of God’s ownership of all souls and His sole right to claim them. May God give him the fortitude to bear this great loss. May God also make paradise the eternal abode for the departed. Amen”. Until his death, Hamza was a student of Rochester Institute of Technology, Dubai and was billed to graduate in 2015.

Doctor Who Treted More Than 100 Ebola Patients Dies From The Virus

The Sierra Leonean doctor who treated more than 100 Ebola patients has also died. Dr Sheik Umar Khan (pictured above), who was hailed as a national hero for disregarding his own health and helping sick patients, died today July 29th from the disease after being diagnosed with the virus last week. He contacted the virus despite wearing protective gear when treating patients. In an interview last month, the 39yr old doctor had expressed fears for his life because of his constant contact with Ebola patients. "I am afraid for my life. Health workers are prone to the disease because we are the first port of call for somebody who is sickened by the disease. Even with the full protective clothing you put on, you are at risk" He told Reuters His death comes days after a senior doctor at Liberia's largest hospital, Samuel Brisbane, died on Saturday at an Ebola treatment centre in Monrovia. 3 nurses working in the same Ebola treatment centre alongside Khan also died from the disease last week. Nigeria Has Lost Its Fight Against Terrorism – USA

The United States government said that the Federal Government of Nigeria has failed in its fight against terrorism. In the US International Religious Report for 2013, released on 28 July, secretary of state John F. Kerry strongly criticized the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration for being too slow to prevent and react to the communal or religious-based violence. Also one of the reasons for such connivance in the country was named poorly equipped and trained security forces responsible for suppression of extremist groups in the north. Here’s only a small part of claims made to the Federal Government: 1) The government also failed to protect victims of violent attacks targeted because of their religious beliefs or for other reasons. 2) Legal proceedings against five police officers charged in 2011 with the extrajudicial killing of Boko Haram leader Mohammed Yusuf did not resume during the year. 3) There were no indictments or prosecutions following three fatal attacks on high-profile Muslim leaders in late 2012. 4) Local and state authorities did not deliver adequate protection or post-attack relief to rural communities in the northeast, where Boko Haram killed villagers and burned churches throughout the year. 5) There is discrimination and a systematic lack of protection by state governments, especially in central Nigeria. 6) Federal, state, and local authorities did not effectively address underlying political, ethnic, and religious grievances leading to this violence. "In Nigeria, casualties and human rights abuses associated with Boko Haram attacks and the government’s response escalated. Boko Haram killed more than 1,000 people during the year. The group targeted a wide array of civilians and sites, including Christian and Muslim religious leaders, churches, and mosques, often killing worshippers during religious services or immediately afterward. The federal government was ineffective in preventing or quelling the violence, only occasionally investigated, prosecuted, or punished those responsible for abuses related to religious freedom, and sometimes responded to violence with heavy-handed tactics, which were associated with both human rights abuses and civilian casualties. Over 10,000 people have fled to neighboring countries as refugees, fearing both Boko Haram and sometimes the military. An attack on the Emir of Kano in January was widely believed to be an attempt by Boko Haram to silence the anti-extremist Muslim leader, although the group did not officially claim responsibility. On September 28, Boko Haram killed at least 50 mostly Muslim students at a technical college in rural Yobe State. After this and other incidents, security forces faced public criticism for arriving at the scene hours after the assailants had fled. Government attempts to stop Boko Haram were largely ineffective. Actions taken by security forces under the state of emergency, declared in May in the three northeastern states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa, often increased the death toll, as bystanders were caught in crossfire during urban gunfights, security forces committed extrajudicial killings of suspected terrorists, and detainees died in custody." It would be recalled that earlier the US government was one of the first who expressed its readiness to assist Nigeria in fight against Boko Haram. It also designated Boko Haram as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) on November 14, 2013. "The kidnapping of hundreds of children by Boko Haram is an unconscionable crime, and we will do everything possible to support the Nigerian Government to return these young women to their homes and to hold the perpetrators to justice. I will tell you, my friends, I have seen this scourge of terror across the planet, and so have you. They don’t offer anything except violence. They don’t offer a health care plan, they don’t offer schools. They don’t tell you how to build a nation; they don’t talk about how they will provide jobs. They just tell people, "You have to behave the way we tell you to," and they will punish you if you don’t, " Secretary of State John F. Kerry said.
