The Worst Place i av everr been to is Lagos, Yahoo Traverer

According to a writer at Yahoo Travel, Lagos is the worst place he has ever visited on planet earth. Lee Abbamonte, a “travel expert” is the man with this opinion. He is described as “the youngest American to visit all 193 member nations of the United Nations.”
Here’s what he says about Lagos:
“As far as I am concerned, Lagos, Nigeria, is the worst place on planet Earth. I’ve never experienced so much corruption in my life. It was just a horrific experience getting into the country. Crossing in from Benin, we got shaken down by the border guards. In addition to the multiple police shakedowns, the multiple ATM issues were enough for me; three times in two days, the machines dispensed the wrong amount of money. It was oppressive and hot. I couldn’t tell you one good thing about that place.”

Osun Tribunal Rules On Omisore’s Petition Monday

The newly constituted Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal led by Justice Elizabeth Ikpejime has fixed Monday for ruling on the request by the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) and its
governorship candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore that the tribunal should not determine the competence of their petition at the pre-hearing stage. Earlier, Ikpejime at the commencement of the pre-trial of the petition filed by Omisore and his party against the re-election of Governor Rauf Aregbesola and the All Progressives Congress (APC) cautioned politicians on the need to allow the panel carry out its assignment without distraction that could jeopardize quick dispensation of justice. The lead counsel of the petitioner, Dr Alex Izinyon (SAN) at the sitting yesterday withdrew an application seeking extension of time for the ongoing inspection of the election materials and had it struck out on the basis that the issue would be sorted out administratively.
He had asked the tribunal to defer the preliminary objection which is challenging the competence of the petition till hearing stage, arguing that the application of the respondents should be heard.

2015: 28 Borno Lawmakers Obtain APC Guber Form For Shettima

Twenty-eight members of both the National Assembly and the Borno State House of Assembly yesterday picked an Expression of Interest and Nomination Form which they intend to donate to the Borno State governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, their choice candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), to enable him seek re-election in 2015.
The lawmakers consist of one out of the two APC senators, five out of the eight members of the House of Representatives under the APC and 22 out of the 27 members of the Borno State House of Assembly, all of whom refused to join the former governor of the state, Ali Modu Sheriff, who moved to the PDP.
Speaking on why the lawmakers decided to obtain the forms for the governor, Hon Tahiru Monguno said that as representatives of Borno people, they were at the party secretariat to express the confidence that Borno people and other residents have in the governor. He said Borno people are very impressed with what he described as “the excellent performance of the governor in the last three and a half years, especially the manner in which he manages the security challenges in the state, his genuine efforts towards reclaiming peace, his reconstruction efforts and his courage in carrying out numerous projects despite the challenges.” source leeadership

Baba Suwe, My Ordeal With NDLEA Tarnished My Image

Popular actor, Bababtunde Omidina aka Baba Suwe in an interview maintained his innocence about the ‘drug pusher’ allegation leveled against him. He’s still demanding for an apology from the NDLEA (National Drug Law Enforcement Agency), to help salvage his reputation.
In his own words: “It is a long story. What they did tarnished my image. It really hurt me. Theatre is the only way I make money and when my films hit Idumota, it makes the most sales in the industry. I make money from my rental business and as a master of ceremony within and outside Nigeria. The incident affected all that.
Going further, he said: “They maltreated me for the 19 days that I was there. I slept on metal chairs. I was taken to another hospital again and yet, nothing was found. At this stage, my son had got a lawyer for me. The lawyer, in confidence, asked me if I was dealing in drug for real so as to know how to run their case and I told him that I was doing no such thing. I told him I had travelled to many developed countries with sophisticated and automated airports and I had never had any case with them.

Boko Haram Captures Mubi Town In Adamawa

Mubi, the hometown of Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Alex Badeh, has finally fallen into the hands of the Boko Haram sect. The town, which is the second largest town and one of the commercial hubs of the state, is now under the control of insurgents, according to fleeing residents. Reports from the town indicate that following the annexation of Mubi town, a fierce battle has ensued between Nigerian troops and the insurgents after the troops were initially overpowered and chased out of Michika local government where they were operating before. The Nigerian troops reportedly tried to put up a stiff resistance against the incursion of the insurgents but had to succumb to the firepower of the insurgents and flee their barracks which the insurgents annexed and went on to steal assorted weapons. After this, the insurgents attacked the prison yard in the town and set the inmates free. They also burnt down Mubi police station and other area commands of the town as they went about bastardising all institutions and symbols of authority and hoisting their flags in various locations in the town. At the time of filing this report, the insurgents were are said to be heading towards the emir’s palace. The emir, Abubakar Isah Ahmadu, however, was lucky not to be in town when the incident occurred as he was still in Saudi Arabia being the state’s Amirul Hajj, but some of his family members are feared trapped in the palace. Reports indicate that thousands of residents fled into the bushes and hilltops to the escape the rampaging insurgents. Fleeing residents said they saw many corpses on their way to the bush while many others are through Digil. When contacted on phone, a fleeing employee of the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, one Mr Medan, confirmed that thousands of residents had fled into the bush, adding that “I’m currently speaking to you from the bush.” Reports also indicate that many of the fleeing residents who tried to cross the Nigeria-Cameroon border were stranded as the Cameroonian gendarmes stopped them from entering their country.
Dozens feared killed
Dozens of Mubi residents are feared killed in the Boko Haram attack on the town. Reports indicate that a fierce battle had earlier in the day taken place in the town as Nigerian troops put up a last-ditch effort to prevent the commercial town from falling into the hands of the insurgents. Fleeing residents told journalists that the Nigerian Air Force had started pounding the insurgents with helicopter gunships, with the sound of explosions and gunfire filling the town. There is apprehension that the repercussions that may result if the insurgents finally capture the town would be colossal as it would lead to a massive humanitarian crisis with hundreds of thousands residents displaced. A fleeing resident, Mr Peters Joshua, told our reporter on phone that, already, thousands of people had fled Mubi while others had run into the bush to escape the battle raging between the troops and the insurgents. “Thousands of people have deserted Mubi and neighbouring towns as people scattered into different directions with some heading towards Cameroon Republic as others heading to Yola and Maiha towns while many ran into the bush,” Joshua said. Another source said that the Boko Haram insurgents also overran from Madagali town to Bazza town, “They are having field day. Following the intensification of hostilities, I had to sneak into Michika town to pick my aged mother, but, surprisingly, only insurgents were in the town; there were no soldiers around,’’ he said. Residents of Maiha town have also claimed seeing soldiers heading towards Yola as thousands others who escaped from Mubi headed towards the town. “We saw soldiers’ vehicles fleeing towards Yola, the state capital,’’ said a local source in Maiha. The latest attack on Mubi is believed to be an attempt by insurgents to consolidate their grip in the Adamawa North Senatorial Zone having captured Madagali and Michika local governments of the state about two months ago. Reports indicate that the insurgents had an upper hand on the soldiers, who were on the fringes of Michika town following the earlier success the troops recorded against the insurgents, forcing them to retreat into the nearby villages. Residents of Uba town, sandwitched between Adamawa and Borno states, have reported that the insurgents had earlier forced the Nigerian troops to beat a retreat to Mubi en route the town. “The insurgents seemed to have an upper hand against the Nigerian troops as they forced the soldiers to retreat to Mubi from parts of Michika that had been annexed by the insurgents,” a resident of Uba told reporters. A fleeing resident of the area, Mallam Sani Garta, said the insurgents were giving the Nigerian troops a run for their money in the renewed offensive. “The insurgents gave the soldiers a hot chase yesterday as they retreated from Mubi. The soldiers passed us in a hasty manner before the insurgents followed them in quick succession, lending credence that they are chasing away the soldiers. “While passing through the town, the insurgents shot many people leading to the deaths of some people, and people escaped into the nearby bush while others headed towards Maiha and Hong local governments,” the resident said. The state governor, Bala Ngillari, has asked the people of the state, particularly those in the affected areas, to remain calm as security agents are trying to address the situation. “This development is unfortunate. His Excellency has met with security chiefs in the state. People should remain calm; security agents are on the top of situation,’’ Mr P.P. Elisha, the director press and public affairs to the governor, said.
Boko Haram hoists flags on Mubi
Boko Haram militants have also hoisted the sect’s flag and imposed a curfew in Mubi. A resident who spoke with the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Malam Ahmad Sajo, said he could not reach his family and parents as the sect had dismantled some communication equipment in the town. “The attack forced many people in the town to flee to neighbouring towns of Adamawa for fear of possible attacks from the terrorists who now operate freely without confrontation from security operatives,” Sajo said. The agency reports that the insurgents have already taken over Mararaba Hildi, few kilometres to Mubi town and Uba local government of the state, prompting a mass exodus of the residents and troops. Residents told the agency that soldiers were seen leaving with their armoured cars and rifles to escape the advancing Boko Haram insurgents. “The militants arrived around noon (yesterday) after successfully attacking neighbouring towns in an overwhelming attack that began last night,” fleeing resident said. “Troops guarding the barracks initially exchanged fire with the militants but fled after more militants arrived in the area with heavy firepower. “It is just a pity that we are not telling ourselves the truth, because there is nothing like ceasefire with Boko Haram. People are just suffering and somebody is out there playing politics with their lives. “It was just a pity that I was driving and could not take the picture of those fleeing soldiers. This country is in serious trouble,” he added. DHQ keeps mum
Meanwhile, mum was the response from the military. The director of information, Defence Headquarters, Major General Chris Olukolade could not be reached through his phone and we received no reply from the text message sent to him. But a security source said the military should not be held responsible since there was a presidential order asking them to respect the ceasefire pact between the federal government and the sect. “What do you want us to do when the president and the commander-in-chief ordered us to respect the ceasefire agreement between the federal government and the terrorists. If the order is withdrawn tonight, terrorists are in trouble. If it is true they have taken over any part of the country, we will not welcome that,” the source said. Another source noted that the latest attacks by the insurgents despite the purported ceasefire deal showed a disagreement among their ranks. “With this new development, it is an indication that the leadership of the terrorists has been factionalised and this is why we should be at alert because a faction of those criminals are not in support of the ceasefire. But it all depends on the federal government,” he noted.

The Dana Airline, has said that it would begin flight operations into the West Africa region by the second quarter of 2015. Mr Samuel Ogbogoro, Head of Corporate Communications of the airline, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Lagos. Ogbogoro said that the airline would also open additional domestic routes by December this year. He said that the new routes would reinforce flight operations across its route network with the acquisition of additional aircraft to boost domestic operations.
“Dana Air is pleased with the positive feedback it continues to receive from its passengers as well as their demand for the airline to extend services to the regional routes to offer excellent customer service. “The airline understands that the services of a reliable airline are built around schedule integrity and safety which remains the fulcrum of Dana’s entire operations,” he said. According to him, the airline will continue to operate flights in line with global safety standards. Dana Air currently operates over 20 flights daily from its hub at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2, to Abuja, Port Harcourt and Uyo. (NAN)

Jonathan Picks PDP’s Presidential Form, Promises To Work With Nigerians

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday in Abuja assured Nigerians that he would continue to work with them to move the country forward. He gave the assurance at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Headquarters after picking the party`s nomination and expression of interest forms to recontest the presidency in 2015. The president said that no matter how strong a president was across the world, he was only an individual that on his own, could do nothing. “You alone cannot change the society. For you to succeed, you work with people; so if you are succeeding that means we have a team that is working to transform this country. “So I will work with all Nigerians to make sure that we move our country to the next level,’’ the president said. He stressed that the days of saying that Nigeria was a potential great country was over, adding that, “Nigeria is a great country’’. This, he said, was demonstrated in the way the country collectively handled the Ebola case with the whole world being happy with Nigeria. President Jonathan, however, added that it was time for all hands to be on deck to move the country to the desired level in the years to come. He thanked Nigerians generally and reassured that his administration would not let the people down. The president also expressed gratitude to the PDP leadership for giving him the right of first refusal. “First let me thank God for today and Nigerians that are here today for this brief ceremony. “Let me thank the leadership and all members of our party for believing in me and for giving me the right of first refusal. “I could have still picked the forms if they did not give me, but giving me the right of first refusal has attracted more people that ordinarily it would have had,’’ the president said.
He specifically thanked the PDP national chairman and members of the party`s National Executive Committee (NEC) for unanimously endorsing the decision of its other organs that adopted him as the party`s sole candidate for the 2015 presidential election. The president also thanked the PDP Governors Forum for providing the N22 million for purchasing the nomination and expression of interest forms for the election. He further thanked members of the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) and other Nigerians for their contributions towards the purchase of the forms. “I remain most grateful for their gesture and I thank them for believing first in this country, secondly for believing in the PDP because they know that this form is for the PDP ticket and lastly, for believing in me,’’ he said. Alhaji Adamu Mu`azu, the PDP National Chairman, however, expressed happiness at the occasion, adding that President Jonathan had made history by coming to pick the forms himself. He, however, announced that the party leadership had decided to give automatic tickets to state governors running for second term, who had performed creditably well, to re-contest their position in 2015. According to him, the governors will be given the right of first refusal.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Jonathan was accompanied by members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and PDP governors, led by Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom and Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum. Mr Richard Lamai, a senatorial aspirant from Edo North Senatorial District, had however, called on Nigerians to support the second term bid of President Jonathan to enable him to continue his transformation agenda (NAN)

Yoruba Actress; Ronke Oshodi. Talks About Sex

Endowed Yoruba actress, Ronke Oshodi Oke in a recent interview with Vanguard, talked about sex and how her boobs brought her fame. Below is an excerpt from her interview:
Before now, I get ashamed of them. But I later began to see the beautiful side and stopped hiding them because they fit me. People appreciate my boobs and I also love it. My boobs are one of the things that brought me to limelight in the movie industry. Are your boobs your selling point?
Yes, it is and apart from that it is one part of my body I cherish most. Your views on Premarital sex?
Sex is a normal part of life just like money. I know I am a Yoruba ambassador but personally I believe any body above 18 and has a serious relationship can have sex even outside marriage. The couple should know what they have underneath their clothes before they get committed to each other for life. What if I do not like the size as a lady? Frankly, it is one of the reasons why many go into extra marital affairs. Even when a man has everything in the world and does not satisfy me sexually, there is serious trouble. I cannot go into a marriage and start regretting, besides, you won’t be able to tell your family members what you are going through in the name of marriage. I can not manage sex, it is either I enjoy it or disapprove it
Why are you not living with your spouse? I prefer how we live apart. At the early stage of our courtship, it was a bone of contention but later he knew what I wanted and I appreciate him for that. If I really want to be successful in my marriage and career, this is how best we feel we can go about it.

Trailer rams into Yenagoa market, kills one, injures seven

TRAGEDY occurred in Swali area of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Saturday after a trailer rammed into a roadside market, killing one person and injuring seven others.
The incident happened a day after The Nation in a special report sounded a warning on dangers posed by roadside markets in Yenagoa and called on the government to relocate them.
The trailer, with number plate, XY 259 FST, also destroyed four tricycles and goods on display at the market. The list obtained by our correspondent from security agents at the scene of the accident showed three male adults, three female adults and two female children, were the casualties. The names of casualties according to the list are, Chigozie Chukwu, 26; Ogadinma Chukwu, female; Juliet Emmanuel, female; and Alao Abule. Others are Eyo Edem Okon, male, 27; Chinyere Uzoma, female, 42; Lawrence Okon; and Ade Emmanuel, female. When our correspondent visited the scene, security men including men of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) were seen controlling traffic removing the trapped tricycles.
Bystanders, market women and men as well as sympathisers were seen crying and discussing the unfortunate accident. The trailer, carrying an excavator, was descending the Swali Bridge when the accident occurred. It was gathered that the accident occurred when the unidentified driver lost control of the heavy-duty truck because of brake failure.
Eyewitnesses said the driver escaped immediately the accident happened.
Sunday said that the driver of the vehicle was coming on top speed as if he was being pursued. Inatimi said the dead victim of the crash, whose name was given as Edem Okon, was dragged by the vehicle more than 100 metres before the driver eventually rammed into the market. He said many people would have died if not that most of the traders saw the danger and took to their heels. He said: “It was a gory accident. We saw the trailer from afar coming in top speed. The driver was driving as if he was drunk or he was being pursued by someone.
“In my very eyes, the driver descending from the bridge suddenly lost control of control of the trailer, swerved from the road and rammed into the traders. The tricycle operators were a bit fortunate that they saw the vehicles in time and ran for their dear lives.
“However, the tricycles were grounded by the trailer. If the drivers were inside when the accident occurred, there is no how they could have survived the accident.
“As I speak to you, the survival of the seven injured traders is doubtful. But we have it on good authority that the first victim (Okon) died while being rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa. “ When contacted, the Sector Commander, Bayelsa State, Mr. Vincent Jack, told our correspondent that the crash was due to brake failure.
Jack said some of his officers and men were detailed to the accident scene as soon as they report of the crash. He confirmed that one person died in the accident while seven persons were critically injured. He said the dead and injured victims were taken to Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa. He gave the number plates of the two destroyed tricycles, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, as BALAJ RE 205 and AWD 30 QA.

Pains And Gains Of Living In Lagos Coastal Communities

Describing their living conditions as pathetic is most certainly an understatement. But every person has a place in the shadows. Though the inhabitants of the coastal communities, predominantly occupied by the Illajes, said they have challenges, they are comfortable in their environment. GEORGE OKOJIE, reports Alhaji Akeem Murtala, a 55-year-old fisherman has lived in Ikorodu-Ajegunle coastal community in Lagos for decades and owes all his successes in life to the coastal community.
As far as he is concerned, their abode has its benefits and challenges and he would prefer to dwell in the riverside community because of the economic benefits he derives from fishing activities. He said, “we are mostly fishermen in this place. Our occupation is fishing. Our parents and grandparents have been fishermen here. We survive from the money we make from fishing. Our children go to school from here with canoes and boats. Speed boats operate regularly here now to the Lagos Island and it is easy for us to go out to sell what we have and come back here. “We want the government to help us to develop the riverside areas. The government cannot say they don t know that we are here. They have developed inside Lagos. We have our own constituency and participate in general election but when you ask our councillors, they tell you our facilities (amenities) are on the way. “For how long and when will our reward and dividends of democracy come are the questions. What I have discovered is that these politicians only ride on our back and dump us like beast of burden as soon as they get to office.
“Some time ago, they told us to relocate from here because of ocean surge and flooding. Many of the inhabitants of Lagos coastal areas are fishermen. We do not see anything bad in high water level causing flood in the state. It is normal and periodical. It is a period we do record highest yield in fishing.
“All this while, the government and people have been complaining of flood, you can see that the whole place is full of fish. We can get about 20 baskets of fish in a day. If the water level is not high, we can only get about six baskets or less. We sell one basket for N7,000 or N7,500 .This is where we get the money to feed and send our children to school.”
Another dweller, Alao Eretan said, “we are happy living on the riverside and do not feel bad living here. We have been living here for more than 100 years. Our parents lived here; this is our place. Even if they want to take us to Ikoyi, Surulere, or Ikeja, we are not going there. This is where we earn our living; we depend on fishing for our daily bread.”
Mrs Omolara Semiu, a teacher seemed to reason otherwise when she said, “our lives are not safe in this environment because of bad incidents that happen from time to time. I am a teacher. I grew up in this community and I have seen a lot of mishaps that occurred here. So many school children have died through boat and canoe mishaps. Sometimes, flood and ocean surge and coastal erosion will just carry away, kill people and destroy property of people living in these areas.
“However, we have remained here and my husband has a saw mill business in this place and the business depends on this water and this kind of environment. Our major problem here is lack of basic necessities of life. There is no bridge to link this place easily to the city. Sometimes we lose people, school children to boat mishaps. But since the government said we should be wearing life-jackets in the boats, people are not dying carelessly again.
“We have about 18 communities in this axis alone. You can see very big buildings already built by our people here on the piece of land that we have and they are still building. Some even have more than five houses here. They got all the money here. The money my children spend in school, we got from here.
“Fish is plentiful here and traders and most city dwellers come from miles away to take advantage of the rich marine life. What the government can do for us is to help develop the place so that we will be alright and live our lives well.” On his part, Akanmu Wole noted that,” Lagos riverside communities are spread across the three senatorial zones in the state and the communities have unique challenges which range from accessible roads and bridges, as they can only be reached via canoes and boats.
“You can see that the communities are surrounded by water yet potable water is a luxury to us. What is available to us as drinking water is polluted and unhygienic water unfit for drinking.”
LEADERSHIP Weekend observed that the coastal communities scattered in different parts of the state whether in Olokunola, Makoko Lekki, Epe have potentials for tourism development, with beautiful sandy beaches devoid of forestation. In most of the dwellings, it was also observed that hygiene and sanitation are very good on these riverside villages. Every household has a pit latrine and there are water-wells which are kept clean all year.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State government said the riverside communities have not been neglected, saying that so many amenities had been provided in the communities to make life comfortable for the dwellers.
The state government said it established ministry of rural development to facilitate developmental projects that would change the people’s living standard.
Annually, the ministry is armed with a budget of N2 billion to carry out projects like water and rural electrification to give the people a taste of urbanisation.
According to the state commissioner for rural development, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, the government has completed projects in Otto-Awori local council development area (LCDA) ready for handing-over to the riverside dwellers.
In Ishagira, a village surrounded by water, with a population of about 2,000, he said the state government commissioned the Solar-powered modified Type ‘A’ water project.
Ojelabi noted that despite the presence of a big river in the area, the village, for over a century never had potable water as they made use of well-water.
He said, to alleviate their plights, the ministry provided the modified Type ‘A’ water project for the community, saying the water is being pumped with the aid of solar.
The commissioner said government was concerned about the poor quality of water the rural populace consumed and urged them to maintain the project so that it could last long.
“You have to embrace the culture of maintenance; maintain this facility and you have to support the government so that it could also support you,” he said.
To enhance sustainability, the commissioner urged the villagers to form themselves into cooperatives so that they can collectively seek assistance from the state government to boost food production.

Chinese Embassy Donates Vehicle To FCT Police Command

The Ambassador of China to Nigeria, Mr Gu Xigotie, has described Nigeria as “a very important partner of China in Africa.’’
Xigotie made the remark on Friday after he donated a Peugeot 301car to the FCT Police Command to assist it in fighting crime in the territory.
He lauded the command for providing security for the embassy and other foreign missions in the territory.
He said “we are very pleased with the FCT Police Command, this donation is just a reflection of the closeness of relations between the embassy and the command.
“It is also a reflection of the relationship between our two countries.’’
The ambassador also commended Nigeria for its ability to contain the Ebola Virus Disease.
He said “I will like to seize this opportunity to congratulate the government and people of Nigeria for the achievement in preventing and containing the EVD. Right now, Nigeria is Ebola-free.’’
Responding, Mr Wilson Inalegwu, the Acting Commissioner of Police in the FCT, described the donation by the embassy as a vote of confidence on the force.

I really want to fall in love again....wouldn’t mind marrying a younger man - A

Nigeria’s "Drummer girl", Ara who signed out of her marriage few years ago lliving her with a 6-year old son, made it known in a recent interview with Punch that she is ready to give marriage another shot.
The singer revealed that, she doesn't just want to get married for the sake of being married, but she wants to get married for love.
Read her words to Punch below:
“When I meet the right person and fall in love, I will consider marriage. I really want to fall in love again. I don’t believe in marriage just for its sake. If a younger guy comes up to me, I don’t mind dating the person. I don’t mind marrying somebody who I am older than. I have spoken to a couple of people and they don’t see anything wrong with it. If the person has a mature mind and is committed, then it is not a big deal.”
Looking for somebody you can control and manipulate?
“I am not that kind of person. I am the most submissive wife. I am ‘mumu’ for love. You can ask my ex, he can tell you. There was never a day I didn’t ask him what I should cook even though I was the breadwinner. I would always ask him what he wanted. And whatever he said, if we didn’t have it, I would jump on an okada and enter the market to go and buy the stuff. I am a hopeless lover,” she said.

My Greatest Challenge Is Staying Relevant–Sammie Okposo

Popular Gospel singer, Sammie Okposo, in this interview with CATHERINE AGBO and ANTHONY ADA Abraham shares some secrets about his personality and his thoughts on the Gospel music genre in Nigeria.
How has it been with you?
So far so good, I thank God. It’s been a great career and I have nothing more to say than “Thank you God for your blessings.”
You are here today to grace this event, how would you rate it? I must say for what happened here today, in terms of the organisation and how everything was put together, even the choice of the recipients of the awards, one must give kudos to LEADERSHIP Newspapers. What are you working on now? Wow… I have two new singles out already that are enjoying massive airplay and publicity; the songs are a fore taste of my new album. Between now and next year, two more singles are going to come out and maybe by the end of January next year, the full album would be out.
What’s your take on the Gospel music industry?
It has definitely improved from what it used to be. There is more structure to-it now. There are new talents. In fact, I’m very happy that a lot of younger people who did not believe or think they should use their talent for God or become gospel artistes are having a change of mind. So, we have a lot of young boys and girls who have taken up gospel music. Gospel music is appealing across board to a whole lot of people now than before. But I still believe the best is still yet to come.
As a pioneer in the Gospel music industry who has worked with a lot of artistes, what do you make of the claim that most Gospel artistes’ songs are inspirational, not Gospel?
Yes, we have a lot of them out there that are changing the status of gospel music. Along the line, they move and say “we are now inspirational”. Well, I’m not going to condemn anybody because this thing is a personal decision and persuasion. It’s what they are comfortable with. It’s not like something that has to be encouraged, but you really cannot tell a grown man or woman what to do with their destiny. If they decide that, you know what I started off with gospel and I don’t think I want to do that anymore, it’s their personal decision. It’s really between them and the Creator. A lot of gospel artistes that have stopped doing gospel are wonderful talents and I would have loved them to stay and tough it out with us and get the success story with us. But if a lot of them have chosen to become secular or inspirational artistes, I think the decision is totally up to them. I’m not here to judge or condemn anyone.
What challenges are there to the gospel music genre in Nigeria?
In the entertainment industry so far, the challenge that I have always talked about is keeping yourself, your brand and music relevant in the industry, because the Nigerian entertainment industry is very competitive. If you sleep and wake up tomorrow, there’s a new song and artiste. So, my biggest challenge is staying relevant in what I do. That is the biggest problem, but God is helping us.
It’s not just a gospel artiste’s thing; all musicians go through same. Every artiste wants to be relevant and talked about. Every artiste wants to be part of the high flyers as far as the industry is concerned. So, it’s a general challenge for secular and gospel artistes.
Have you ever been looked down upon because you are a Gospel music artiste?
Well…I have not been looked down on because that’s not the phrase I want to use; but I have been kind of taken for granted. People are usually like “these Church people, they have come again”. There have been concerts where artistes are performing and they say, “Sammie Okposo is here; is he the only gospel artiste? Let him go and open the show nah.” But a lot of times, God has surprised them because when I’m done, the show will be practically over. When I come in, I give the people my best. They used to think that gospel music is Church music. They really do not have the same respect and regard they have for secular artistes. But all of that is changing now. I’m a gospel artiste, but I have a corporate endorsement-I’m a Globacom ambassador. I’m relevant in my industry and government. So the mindset now is, “wow! we shouldn’t be really looking down on or commonising these gospel artistes because they are on top of their games and goals.”
What has been the highest point of your career so far?
That’s difficult to say because I’ve had a lot of high points. Apart from everything God has done in my life, the mentality of the corporate world about identifying with gospel music was changed in my time and broken with me. When I look back at the first day I was signed on as a Globacom ambassador, I think it’s a pacesetting moment and a trend that was never expected. I look at it as change that has opened the door for a whole lot of artistes to come in and be as prominent as secular artistes. Where is the weirdest place you have signed an autograph?
(Laugh) the weirdest place is on somebody’s back; the right or left shoulder. It was on a white shirt. He said sign it on my back. I took the marker and asked, “Are you not going to wash this shirt?” He said, “No…I will keep this shirt, because it’s going to be a memorial for me.” It was weird; but you are not a celebrity without the fans-the fans make you who you are. Tell us something you have not told anyone in an interview before?
Ah…(chuckles) You won’t believe this, but I’m a shy person. I don’t say this: when I’m on TV or on stage I’m energetic, but I’m very shy… and meek. The reason why I’m in the midst of a lot of people is because of my work. I like my space, but I try not to say that. You have blown my cover on LEADERSHIP Newspapers. Now, anytime I’m jumping up and down people will say it’s a lie. (laughs)
Finally, you are very close to politicians, are you considering…?
(Cuts in) yes, eventually. But I’m waiting for the right time. A lot of my colleagues are jumping into it right now. Everything in life is time. It will be a good thing, because I’m a change agent. I won’t jump into it for any financial gain because God has taken me to a place that, although I’m not a billionaire, I’m also not poor. I can afford anything I want. So if I’m going to go into politics, I want to be ready to bring change. I won’t allow the system change me, instead I will take change over there.
What’s your message to young artistes who want to be like Sammie Okposo?
Well, if you want to be inspired by Sammie Okposo, or you want him to be a mentor, you have to identify who you are. If you want to be inspired by somebody like me, you must have something peculiar. There’s nothing wrong with trying to be like somebody, but if you do that, it would only sell for a while. Discover yourself and bring out that thing that makes you you, so that when they hear it, they know that’s Sammie Okposo, Daddy Showkey, J Martins.

WIZ-KID, I Still Have Love For Samklef

Recently, producer Samklef attributed Wizkid’s negative attitude towards people he once helped to the use of drugs. He claimed in an interview that a constant use of marijuana has affected Wizkid’s mental capacity.
“The issue is Wizkid himself. He is smoking too much marijuana and it’s affecting him mentally,” he said. Samklef advised his former protégé to ease off marijuana.
Samklef has been highly critical of Wizkid for not acknowledging him anymore, going on rants on social media and unfollowing the artiste on Instagram and Twitter.
But in a swift reaction, the Don’t Dull crooner who is enjoying fame said in an interview that he has ‘big respect’ for Samklef and whatever he says won’t annoy him because he has so much love for him.

How Ikenna Emedike was sacked from Gulder Ultimate Search

Ikenna Emedike, the sixth contestant to be shown the door in the ongoing Gulder Ultimate Search (GUS) reality show, had dreamt of his exit, two days earlier.
The medical doctor and indigene of Anambra, host state of the show, lost out in the Octagon Chart task, and was given three seconds to exit the jungle, despite his plea for a second chance.
In the Octagon Chart task, the GUS 11 contestants were to make three trips down a hill and retrieve three pieces of a hexagon; one piece at a time. Upon return to their work stations, they were to solve a puzzle, using parts of the hexagon to form the answer. The other contestants solved the puzzle in succession and left for another location, leaving Ikenna at the workstation. By the time he called to Chidi Mokeme to say he had solved the riddle, the anchor man told him he had been evicted from the show. A dejected Ikenna said he didn’t expect that the task will lead to eviction, given the reason he was not in haste to solve the puzzle. He however blamed his poor performance on hunger, which he said did not make him think straight.
From all indications, Ikenna’s eviction from the jungle was different. Others evictees were asked to leave, either at the task ground or at the Place of The Talking Drum. They were also allowed to return to camp to pack their belongings. But in the case of the medical doctor, he was not evicted in the presence of the other contestants, who have been wondering about his whereabouts. After completing their tasks, his colleagues returned to camp to find a scroll which directed them to bring Ikenna’s bag and totem to The Place of the Talking Drum. They immediately knew he had been evicted.
Ikenna, by his fate, joins Loretta Erijakpor, Sandra Nwagbagiro, Blessing Eriata, Joshua Nwagboso and Iwuoha Ikenna who were earlier evicted from the show.
He revealed that he had dreamt about his eviction. “In the dream,” he said, “we as contestants were performing a particular task and all of a sudden, a number of us were evicted. It happened so fast that I felt it was odd. I wondered what was happening. The remaining people left were a male and a female contestant. In the dream, I asked Chidi Mokeme, the anchor man whether this was the way things were done on Gulder Ultimate Search.”
He recalled telling some contestants about the dream, but they brushed it off. When asked if he nursed the fear that the dream might come to pass, Ikenna answered: “I was very worried. I prayed against it anyway. It got me worried to the point that I told myself, maybe it was destined to happen, whatever comes out of this competition, I will attribute it to the will of God.”
with the exit of Ikenna, the race for the grand prize of N10 million and a brand new Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) continues with Otto Canon, Addoh Evi, Iroh Noella, Samantha Appi, Emmanuel Afolabi, Sharon Robinson, Chinedu Ubachukwu and Cosy Joe. The show is broadcast everyday on AfricaMagic World (DSTV), Real -Stars (Star Times), Minaj TV Obosi, Ebony Life TV (DSTV), Galaxy TV (Lagos, Ibadan and Ondo), Hip TV (DSTV & GoTV), Nigezie (Star Times) and WapTV (Star Times) from 10pm to 11pm; and on AIT network from 10:30pm to 11:30pm.

Boko Haram: Abductions, bomb kill ceasefire hopes

Whatever is left of the hopes of the “ceasefire” between the Federal Government and Boko Haram insurgents have been shattered. More women are being abducted, men killed and homes burnt in Borno and Adamawa states. Besides, a bomb went off Wednesday night in Azare, Bauchi State. Five people were killed and 12 injured, according to the police.
This followed the abduction of about 45 women in Magadali in Adamawa State on Tuesday. Some of those who were freed after the abduction told reporters in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, yesterday that many of the younger women among those abducted were forcibly taken straight into matrimony.
In spite of this, the government delegation and supposed representatives of the sect were in talks in N’Djamena, the Chadian capital. The talks are being moderated by Chadian President Idris Derby. Details are, however, unavailable. Residents of the town of Wagga told AFP that 40 females were kidnapped by suspected Islamist gunmen who went door-to-door, specifically looking for young women and girls. “They left N1500 and some kola nuts in each home where they seized a woman, apparently as a bride price,” said Lazarus Baushe, an elder of the Wagga community. Witnesses in the nearby town of Gwarta separately reported a kidnapping last weekend involving another 20 female victims, but details were not immediately clear.
Bauchi police spokesman Mohammed Haruna said the dead in the Azare bus station blast were “burnt beyond recognition”. No-one claimed responsibility, but Bauchi has been attacked repeatedly throughout Boko Haram’s brutal five-year uprising, which has left more than 10,000 people dead.
“Five persons burned beyond recognition were certified dead, while 12 others sustained various degrees of injuries,” Haruna said. “The entire surrounding (area) has been cordoned off … No arrest has yet been made, but an investigation has commenced.” A Chadian diplomat told Reuters that a deal could still be reached if this faction has ultimate control over the girls — although analysts say that could be divided between several cooperating factions. Reports of fresh kidnappings by the Islamists first emerged on Saturday near Chibok, where 219 schoolgirls were seized since April. Their release is part of the ongoing talks.
Confirmation that the Bauchi bombing or the latest abductions were tied to Boko Haram would further undermine the government’s claim that they have negotiated a ceasefire with the extremists. After Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh announced the ceasefire following talks in Saudi Arabia, a senior aide to President Goodluck Jonathan said Boko Haram had agreed to release the schoolgirls. But evidence is mounting that both pacts were hollow.
There has been no comment so far from Boko Haram’s purported leader Abubakar Shekau and hopes voiced by the Presidency that the girls would be released by Tuesday came to nothing.
Nigerian negotiators were reportedly set to resume talks with Boko Haram envoys in neighbouring Chad next week, but further questions will likely be asked about the identities of the purported sect negotiators. Some of the residents of Michika and Madagali local government areas, Adamawa State, who were abducted by Boko Haram have returned home, bearing tales of their harrowing experience.
Some of the 45 girls and women recently abducted in the area have been wedded to fighters of the Islamic sect, they said. The insurgents, according to the returnees, have also turned some of the abducted girls to maidens who cook their food. Many of the relatives of some of the abducted girls who were released because of ill health told reporters in Yola, the state capital, that their relatives claimed that some of the girls had been turned to cooks while others were married off to the fighters. A relative to one of the women released by the insurgents who does not want his name in print said initially, the insurgents seized about 80 girls and women whom they loaded into vans and zoomed off.
He added that later in the night, the insurgents separated the elderly women from the girls and released them. Many, the source said, are languishing in the forest as they could not find their way back to the towns. “We were told by trapped residents that the elderly women were released while the insurgents went away with the young ones,” he said.
A relative of one of the abducted girls has enjoined the Federal and Adamawa State sovernments to intensify efforts at rescuing the abducted girls so that they will not be left in the hands of the insurgents for too long to save them from being abused. “We are confused that hours after the so called ceasefire agreement has been entered between the Federal Government and Boko Haram insurgents, our girls were abducted by the insurgents.
“We are at a loss about the government’s sincerity on the whole issue and we urge it to rescue our daughters without further delay as we are ready to die searching for our missing ones,” he said. More than 400 girls have so far been kidnapped by the fighters since April 2014 in many places across Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states since the insurgency began five years ago. Print Friendly

T.B Joshua to appear before coroner Nov. 5th Over Collaps Building

Prophet T.B Joshua will on Nov. 5th face the Lagos State coroner investigating the circumstances that led to the collapse of the church 5-storey building which killed 115 people.
At a sitting which held today Oct. 24th, the coroner, Magistrate O.A. Komolafe said it was mandatory the man of God and the contractor that handled the building project appear before him to give their own account of what led to the building collapse, a position the defense counsel argued against but was objected by the coroner
"We have heard that he has been addressing the press at various times. Let him come and address the court. The court has summoned him; let him come and tell us what he knows. He cannot sit over there and be sending words to us that he cannot come. The court has said that for the purpose of what we're doing that he should come over.” the coroner said

Microsoft Co-founder Pledges 100m Dollars To Fight Ebola

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has pledged to increase his commitment to fight the Ebola epidemic to 100 million dollars.
The money was earmarked to pay for two containment units, which the U.S. State Department would use to evacuate sick medical professionals from West Africa.
Allen said he is partnering with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to help coordinate the logistics required to transport international aid workers.
Meanwhile, members of the WHO emergency committee on Ebola said on Friday in Geneva that donations are needed and more international health workers are required to stop the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
The committee stressed that the focus must be on tackling Ebola in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, where 9,900 people have been infected with the virus and 4,900 have died.
They said all countries should strengthen education and communication efforts to combat stigma, disproportionate fear, inappropriate measures and reactions associated with Ebola.
They said this has become imperative so that patients do not fear reporting to health authorities when they contacted Ebola virus.
The committee spoke out against cancelling planned mass events in Ebola-free countries. (dpa/NAN)
